"Cowley Road has an interesting history but isn't the most photogenic road. However, this opportunity presented itself: I liked the colouring and it gave me an excuse to write a Cowley Road caption on the back of the card." J J Marshall
URBANPIX CAPTION for this Oxford card:
The Cowley Road lies to the east of the City, from the roundabout near Magdalen Bridge (known as The Plain) through the inner city area of shops and houses and out into the industrial suburb and the BMW car factory on the eastern ring road.
Cowley Road is home to an ethnically and economically diverse population of long-standing South-Asian and Afro-Caribbean communities who have been joined more recently by East European, Chinese and African arrivals. Alongside these groups, East Oxford plays host to many members of the city’s academic population, both undergraduate and academic staff, and is home to many politically active groups.
The Cowley Road is a vibrant part of the city with a strong community identity and a buzzing night life centred around the Bullingdon Arms that hosts the Famous Monday Night Blues and the O2 Academy that plays a prominent part in the young music scene. The Cowley Road Carnival is an annual event, held in July each year.
